Austin Homebrew Supply – Jimmy Filling an All-Grain Recipe – Utah HB51 Collaboration Amber Ale

by brew beer on August 13, 2010

Jimmy at Austin Homebrew Supply filling the all grain recipe for Utah HB51 Collaboration Amber Ale. Big thanks to Jimmy for allowing me to video. Utah’s House Bill 51 recently passed, allowing homebrewing for the first time in the state’s history. The homebrewers immediately started making recipes for beers that they naturally named “HB51′s” in honor of the new law. This “Collaboration Amber Ale” is a Utah homebrew group’s attempt to make a standardized HB51. I can’t wait to make and taste it. Stand by, video of the making and tasting to come. @threeque I wish! Actually, the usual guy who is there when I go won’t let me film him but I take my camera each time just in case. Jimmy’s a great guy, was okay to video and youtube it. Yessiree, this is a great store and has a HUGE warehouse just behind where Jimmy is doing the grains. Hog heaven for homebrewers!!!

Nelson Sauvin! Nelson Sauvin! Nelson Sauvin!! Austin Homebrew Supply is one of only a few shops that sell the Nelson Sauvin hop from New Zealand. I would highly recommend you buy some, before I buy their entire stock!

I’m so jealous! :-) I would love to have such a great store near where I live. Their selection pretty much had me drooling!

@terpsichoreankid I know, it’s so much fun to go there, so many toys and ingredients. I wish everyone had a shop like this nearby. Hey, thanks again for putting me onto using a thief to take my SG. I bought one of those when I bought this kit. So much easier to get a sample. Groovy.

Nice store. Eighteen bucks to brew a beer that is 10X better than BMC but half the cost.

@jturie LOL, yup. Course, it’ll be another week or so before I can taste this one. But it’s gotta be better than BMC and hopefully many others. Thanks!

Wow! That’s unbelievable. I really couldn’t believe my eyes. You guys have to understand that we have NOTHING close to that up here anywhere. I’ve asked TSA how much he paid for those big bags of grains. He won’t respond because he probably paid through both nostrils and an ear, or he had to drive for an hour and back. He won’t tell me, so… there’s the help I get. Anyway, I have limited access to some grains, and with some help, I might be able to create some decent partial extract brews.

@CraigTube I know, it’s so amazing to be near such a well-known and respected brew shop. Guess what, when I was up at Austin Homebrew the other day, they played this video in the store and pumped the sound out the PA system. I was so embarrassed but proud as a new momma hen. A guy came up behind me and said in a low voice, “Ah look at that guy, he’s so ugly”…. I spun around to confront him and it was Jimmy himself, having some fun with me. I wish I could send this shop to all my buddies!

@nige4958 I looked for Nelson Sauvin when I went up there the other day. Alas, they were totally out!!! But are due to get more on July 2nd. I told JB from up there to be on the lookout for you and not let you buy them out again. He laughed and said ok, LOL!!
